Live with Intention (and let it be easy)

Live with Intention (and let it be easy)

Are you drifting through life? Living on autopilot? Wondering what’s going to happen next, instead of going after what you want with vigor and determination?

Snap out of it! YOU decide how your life gets to be.

Live with intention.

It doesn’t need to be hard. It can be a gentle shift in how you approach each day, each moment.

Ask yourself:

  • Who do I want to be today? Who do I want to be in this moment?
  • What do I want out of my day today? How do I want my day to go?
  • Who do I want to be in this lifetime? How do I want this life of mine to go?

As you get clear on these answers, decide to act in a manner consistent with what you’ve chosen. You get to be whoever you want!

It’s easier said than done, but awareness is the first step. Realize that you are not stuck being the same person you have been your whole life up until now. You don’t have to be whoever you’ve been conditioned to be. You can re-condition yourself, on your own terms. (Again, it’s not always easy – but it’s absolutely possible.)

As you choose a different path for yourself, set the intention for each day, each moment. Just doing this one small thing can make a huge difference.

Try it right now.

Who do you want to be in this moment? (For me, right now, I’d say: a writer who produces clear and effective work.)

Now, act like that. If you don’t feel like you can embody that version of you right now, imagine how it would feel to act like that. (For me: I’m writing this post right now and staying focused on what I want it to accomplish. Just a moment earlier, I had to imagine myself sitting up at my computer, good posture, mind clear of distractions, and writing with a plan. Then… I stepped into that person and acted like it. I took the next step with intentional action, bridging the gap between my imagined self and my actual self; becoming that version of myself that was only in my head a moment ago.)

This is a low-stakes, easy version of this exercise. If you’re struggling to bridge the gap between real and imagined self, start simple. Before you’re about to do something, tell yourself (in other words, set the intention of) what you’re about to do. For example, before you get up to go use the bathroom, tell yourself: “I am going to go use the bathroom.” Then do it. This is reinforcing your belief in yourself that yes, you do in fact do the things you say you will. Start small and work your way up. Eventually you’ll be able to tell yourself (i.e. set the intention) that you will do harder things and more importantly follow through on those things. But it all starts with leading with the intention.

Keep applying this to other moments and areas of your life.

What do you want to do in the next hour? How do you want to show up tomorrow? What do you want to achieve this month? This year? This decade? This lifetime?

Let your desires reveal themselves to you, then set the intention to realize them. See how your life changes.

You can do it! I believe in you – in fact, I believe that this is how everyone can and should be operating 😉 so you’re not special at all – it’s no big deal to go after your dreams. It’s what we should all be doing.

So with that, go for it! You got this.
