Recap of Paris Night 1 of The Eras Tour (First Time TTPD Was Performed Live!!!)
Lost my mind watching this livestream!
Unfiltered, mostly unedited first impressions below.
Apologies in advance for the god awful images. They’re obviously just screenshots from various grainy livestreams (for which I am so grateful!!)
Opening Act: Paramore!
Tuned into the livestream when Paramore was partway through their set. I love Paramore! I grew up with them. They fucking killed it. Never seen them live but this reminded me that I want to!
Pre-show stage screen
Instead of showing the pictures of Taylor from her different eras in color, the screen would occasionally go black and white – signaling TTPD?! We all expected it was coming but this was like the first clue in the actual show.
Opening medley
There were clips from TTPD inserted into the opening medley at the start of the show, when the dancers first come out on stage with those big fans! She added “What if I told you I’m coming back?” from the Alchemy and then a little later on (after “My name is Taylor and I was born in 1989!”) she added “Straight from the Tortured Poets Department…” Everyone went wild.
Lover set
New bodysuit! Thought it was red, guess it was actually more orange…? And there was an orange blazer for The Man.
She cut the Archer – knew she would since it was cut from the Eras tour movie. Still hurt 🥲
Fearless set
Again, a new outfit! A silver and black dress (or rather a bodysuit with long fringe? Never clear on this) and black boots.
Red set
The first change in the set order! Red after Fearless (not evermore???) At this point I felt sure there would be other changes in the order of the eras.
New outfit, again! This time her r-shirt read THIS IS NOT TAYLOR’S VERSION.
Speak Now set
The intro was different, both on screen and with the dancers entering and doing a new number.
Also… a new dress! Loved this one, it was so gorgeous.
She only played Enchanted and cut Long Live 🥲
Reputation set
This set was largely unchanged. I feel like there won’t be any changes to it until the re-release of Reputation Taylor’s Version.
But there was a new outro! It was an orange, white and black snake (a milk snake, perhaps?) slithering through the forest floor. By this point in the show there had already been a lot of new orange introduced, I gotta say… (Karma truthers, you out there?)
folklore/evermore set (folkmore/everlore)
Surprising us all, the first song was Cardigan (not the 1 🥲), then she hopped into Betty. Then… she went over to the evermore piano… and shared that the sister albums folklore and evermore were now being combined into one set in the tour! Jokingly saying we could call it the folkmore or everlore set, whatever we like. Then she hit us with champagne problems, august, illicit affairs, my tears richocet, and marjorie, ending on willow with an absolutely insane lightnight strike transition that got the crowd so hyped up.
1989 set
Next up, 1989! Her top and bottom were new cuts (a strappier Roberto Cavalli top, and more flared skater skirt on the bottom) and they were in different colors: a purple top, a teal skirt. Loved it.
Then she hit us all with…
The Tortured Poets Department set
Ahhhasdasdfhoaf!!!!!!! Was how we all felt.
A deliciously creepy sounding score. Lots of discordant strings (at least I’d say – I’m not a real music person). The visuals were like the Fortnight music video with a dark sky and an endless road dropping down from the sky and coming to roll out flat into the distance. Loose sheets of paper falling and swirling all over the place. Two large cages drop into view, askew on the ground. Dancers come out in all white, then Taylor pops up in the front of the stage wearing a black choker and white dress like her outfit from the 2024 Grammy’s with lyrics printed on it. Then cue… But Daddy I Love Him ?!!!!
This was solid. The theatrics of it, the dancing, the little hand movements they do at “God save the most judgmental creeps…” – I LIVED for it. The silly little dance at “Now I’m dancing in my dress in the sun and…” So fun.
Then she hit us all with a little bit of So High School. It was unexpected but cute. I liked how they made the stage risers look like bleachers and apparently the some of Travis Kelce’s dance moves are incorporated into the dancers’ choreo.
Up next… Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me. SOLID set production happening at this point with the dramatic visuals on screen of a lady, tormented by her thoughts all alone in the attic, a white outline of Taylor’s body levitating on screen, Taylor actually rising up on her little platform and acting out the madwoman while she sings, the creepy eerie greenish lighting that makes it all look like a little bit of a Victorian horror movie… and to cap it all off, the close up of her face on the back screen with a filter that completely whites out her eyes. Loved it.
I could barely contain myself when the UFO came onto the screen next for Down Bad 🛸😭 I love this song. I loved how they had a beam of light coming down on her as if from the UFO, and I don’t know how they did it but the effect of her platform circling around the stage while she sings was amazing. It even made an infinity symbol towards the end which could mean… so many things (eternal love? Infinite sadness? Aw. Karma???)
What came next? She started singing “I love you, it’s ruining my life” in Down Bad then transitioned to Fortnight. I don’t think I’m ever going to love the song except for Post Malone’s part but this part of the set was still cool with the creative little bed prop and choreo.
She then dons a military looking jacket to perform The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived. I wasn’t expecting this song to be in the TTPD set at all but I’m glad it made it! It’s a strong song.
The transition out of this song and into the next was MAJOR. It was so theatrical and entertaining. The two male dancers I know best from watching the show come out with a prop couch as she collapses and they keep propping her back up. She does an onstage change stepping out of her white TTPD dress to reveal a sequin two piece outfit, a dancer changes her shoes (the trust!) and she dons a ringleader’s jacket.
I kind of thought it was going to transition into My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys (probably my least favorite song) because they were treating her like a doll, but turns out the act was about her not wanting to go on, stay standing, move, even, but then pushing through to PERFORM, honey. Cue I Can Do It With A Broken Heart.
A fantastic performance follows. It was a cool touch to have the call backs to old Hollywood on the screen too with the black and white visuals of the Hollywood sign and movie theater marquee with the song title on it. The dancers were dressed to match the vibe with their suits and top hats and feathered fans too.
After that amazingness followed the surprise songs.
Acoustic set
Paris night 1 got a new pink dress, debuting the new style of her acoustic set dresses. Taylor jokingly referred to the show’s changes with the TTPD set “Female Rage: The Musical” then proceeded to play Paris on guitar, followed by loml on piano.
Midnights set
The songs in the set remained unchanged, which makes senes considering it’s still her most recent new album prior to TTPD so she’s still touring it for the first time with the Eras tour. But Taylor did reveal one more new outfit with her Midnight Rain bodysuit change. The straps mirror the 1989 top with the straps. This was a personal favorite of all the Midnights bodysuits she’s worn so far.
And that was it! I absolutely loved the addition of the TTPD set and think it’s one of the best sets in the show. I’m sad that the 1, Long Live and The Archer got cut – I would have rather lost other songs – but that’s how it goes and I’m not actually upset. It was totally worth it for the updates in the show. The surprise songs are still the best part of the show in my opinion and she has been absolutely killing it with the song choices and mashups and medleys since she started the European leg of the tour. (Guilty as sin? and the 1989 medley were my favorites.)
I won’t get to see the updated Eras tour live but loved being able to watch it on the livestream. And thank goodness for YouTube with all of the surprise song recordings out there. What a time to be alive.
To watch livestreams of the Eras tour I cannot recommend taylorswifthockeybro’s YouTube channel enough. He is the absolute MVP of the Eras tour livestreams and streams every single show no matter the location (or time zone!) If you watch any of his videos or livestreams at all, give the guy a follow.
