Lexie Liu is The Global Pop Star We Need Today
Lexie Liu is a Chinese artist whose cool, polished, genre-shifting sound is entirely modern and 1000% her. She serves familiar Y2K and pop vibes but is still completely fresh and of the moment.
If you like knowing what’s next in music, watch Lexie Liu!
What does Lexie Liu sound like?
Lexie Liu sings and raps with a cool and sweet voice. She flips from angelic to commanding and everything in between. It’s also super satisfying to hear her switch between languages like when she goes between Mandarin, English and Spanish on tracks like DIABLO (perfection!)
Liu’s sound varies across projects but will appeal to fans of Tinashe, Ladytron, and BIBI. Her music can also sound at times like Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails, as well as sweeter singers like Alex Mali or K-Pop artists like (G)I-DLE.
In fact, Lexie Liu was a part of the League of Legends virtual K-Pop group K/DA (which I didn’t realize until writing this, even though I’ve had that song on Apple music for ages!)
Dig deeper into her discography and you’ll find sounds that are more heavily influenced by the general direction of pop in recent years; heavier on hip hop and R&B production and flows – something Liu sinks into deftly.
She also used to be with 88 rising if that’s any indication of her sound and vibe, although she has since been carving out her own lane with a fresh style and musical aesthetic that reflects something new, exciting, and sooo deeply needed in the world of music today.
What Lexie Liu songs should I listen to?
One of her greatest fan favorites is 佳人 (aka Kappa Girl/Jia Ren). Let me tell you, I LOVE this song. Sadly (criminally!!) it isn’t available on any streaming platforms nor is it available for purchase since it’s actually an ad for Kappa. (Can we petition somewhere for this song to be made available to stream or purchase? I would buy it in an instant.) That just means you have to go to YouTube to listen to it and watch the video:
Start with that song for a solid intro to Lexie Liu’s music, then jump straight into her latest album The Happy Star which showcases the most complete evolution of her sound and image as an artist. At times it sounds nostalgic but it consistently delivers contemporary beats, production and lyrics.
I also love the range of Liu’s lyrical content. She gives a jaded lament on the dreary repetition of the 9-5 (GANMA), ruminates on a failed relationship in a slow broken-hearted piano ballad (Bad Dream), and explores the realm of tarot and manifesting your reality (FORTUNA & MAGICIAN – make sure you watch the music videos in that order for the best experience – it’s a two video story!) Infectious bop RRR is a perfect example of what I’ve come to associate Liu with – the sound of global pop! – using Bollywood influences to make a song that is still entirely her own.
Lexie Liu knows exactly how to craft instantly catchy yet layered songs that bear replay after replay. She has no bad tracks. Don’t miss out!
Top picks from each album:
Meta Ego (2019)
2030 (2019)
Don’t sleep on her singles and EPs either:

If you like Lexie Liu’s music and want to see more of her work, there’s plenty to check out. She always serves with the visuals so it’s a good time to check out any of her videos.
I love these performance videos of FORTUNA, DIABLO, Penrose X Metropolis, and Jia Ren:
Lexie Liu also used to be on a competition show called K Pop Star as a teen, she’s been a Miu Miu ambassador, and she performs at the occasional concert so there are plenty of places to see more of her. You can count on her continuing to deliver something great!
